Gua Sha

Another ancient and well-established technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is Gua Sha.

How does Gua Sha work?

Gua Sha is similar to Cupping and has stimulating effects on the skin, tissue, lymphatic system, meridians, bone tissue and muscles. Although Gua Sha is equally effective as Cupping, both methods are usually not used together.

How is Gua Sha conducted?

The affected area is pre-treated with a special oil. Then the body surface in this area is scraped with an instrument whose edges are rounded. Usually a porcelain spoon or a rounded piece of jade or horn is used. The skin, the underlying tissue and the qì of the meridians are stimulated by scraping of the acupuncture points on the meridians.

Does Gua Sha hurt?

Due to the rounded forms of the Gua Sha instruments pain is rarely felt. However, what often happen are changes in skin color. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the stronger the „stasis” the more the skin will change in color. After treatment, patients typically feel immediate relief and change.

What is Gua Sha used for?

I use Gua Sha similar to Cupping in conditions like muscle tension, joint disorders, back pain, stiffness, neck and shoulder pain, colds, coughs and gynecological disorders.
